John Lane, Episode 1

John has worked as a professional performer, and director of community arts projects for the past 44 years. His gigs and projects have taken him to festivals across Australia and in the USA; into mining towns, schools, campuses, meat works, prisons, hospitals, parks and gardens, halls huge and small; onto trams, buses, ferries and trains, and even occasionally into theatres.

John worked full time with three community theatre companies for ten years, then spent a couple of decades living the life of a freelance performer, director and producer. His path led him to the health sector, and since 2000 he has been the Artistic Coordinator of the Festival for Healthy Living program with the Royal Children’s Hospital Mental Health Service; involving the creation and coordination of arts and wellbeing projects in more than 35 disadvantaged communities across Victoria.

Creative Recovery’s Scotia Monkivitch spoke with John in Melbourne about the intersection of health, education and creativity, and the ways in which the Festival for Healthy Living supports the wellbeing of children, young people and families.
