Community Trauma Toolkit

Emerging Mind

Winner of the 2019 Resilient Australia National Significance Award, the Community Trauma Toolkit contains resources to help and support adults and children before, during and after a disaster or traumatic event.

Emergencies and disasters are extremely stressful and it is normal to feel overwhelmed. Children, even infants, can also be affected. They depend on the adults around them for safety and security, and will need reassurance, care, and opportunities to share their feelings. These resources provide a starting point for adults to help children navigate the different stages of a disaster.

The information in the toolkit is grouped into the six key audiences uniquely placed to support children and families in the event of a natural disaster or traumatic event: Parents and caregivers, General practitioners, Educators, Community leaders, First responders, and Health and social service workforces.

The resources can then be filtered by the natural disaster or traumatic event timelines: Preparedness; Immediate; Short-term recovery; Long-term recovery; and Ongoing.
